Open Access Publication

Author Select^®—An Open Access Option

American Institute of Physics authors, through AIP’s Author Select® initiative, have the option to choose open access for their published article. By supporting both publication and archiving costs through payment of a $2200 fee,¹ authors may instruct the journal to provide free online access to their published article, in perpetuity, to any online user. A subscription to the online journal will not be required to access full-text versions of these open access articles. In addition, authors will retain copyright to their articles, which will be published under a Creative Commons (CC-BY) license.² In choosing Author Select, authors are able to fully comply with many funding agency mandates and open access requirements.

The Editor(s) and reviewers are not informed of an author’s choice concerning open access; thus, the author’s decision in this regard will have no impact on any aspect of the peer review process or on an Editor’s ultimate decision regarding publication. The peer review process will proceed normally regardless of the author’s choice of conventional publication or open access publication.

When submitting either a new or revised manuscript to the journal’s online submission system, authors will be asked if they wish to pay the $2200 fee to have their paper, if accepted, published with open access for all readers. Authors who choose open access will be asked to make payment prior to publication of their article. Authors will be provided with a link to a customized website where they will be able to make their open access payment in a secure online environment.

When deciding on participation in Author Select, authors should note that payment of the open access fee does not cover other publication charges, such as excess page fees and charges for reprints and color in print.
